One Call to Greg and our registration was resent

Jane Burmeister

The new smog requirement and registration on the CARB website was confusing. A friend told me to call Greg at Trucksmog dot com and I am glad I did. He told me to text him an image of my registration and a good email address.

  • Greg registered us on the carb website.
  • emailed back a CARB username and passwords.
  • Then, sheduled a test for the next day.

We were good to go in less than 24 hours. Test was $225. I think CARB fee was $31.00   Thanks  Greg

California Diesel Smog Check

  • Every diesel motorhome registered in California 14,000 pounds and heavier.

  • Must be tested any time within a 90 day period before DMV registration due date.

  • The requirement is a California Air Resources Board CARB rule .

  • DMV only checks that CARB has record of a completed test prior to DMV submitting a new year registration.

  • Testing for personal-use-non-commercial Motorhomes is required only once a year.

  • testing checks that emissions control device health remain compliant to the RV model year, all Engine manufacturers labels are present, and operating maintenance is complete

  • Owner maintained RVs with no engine modifications often pass without needing repairs.

  • Pre 2010 DEF model year  Personal-use-non-commercial Motorhomes are not required to be retrofitted with Diesel Exhaust FIlters. Are Not required

  • Out of State personal use registered motorhomes operated by non CA Owners  for a short visit are not required to have this test completed.

  • Diesel fuel delivery issues cause early expensive engine wear. These test are great indicators of healthy operation.

The Process

The process requires registration a fleet with the California Air Resources board. I know. For one-off fleet  motorhome owners this is nothing more than owner contact information, username and, password stuff.  Step TWO  email verification.  Step Three log into fleet owner CARB profile and enter Motorhome Vin and Plate numbers  . Step Four Wait for Carb to return an invoice. Fee is usually just $33.00 each year if no back fees or fines show up on the plate vin search. This return invoice usually takes three to 7 days. Step Five Schedule perform and submit  a certified test. Our CarbCT mobile units are equipped with real-time computer link to submit test results and receive a compliancy pass or fail.

Registration and reporting do not need to be complete to proceed with an actual test visit.  Date to test must be within the 90-day period prior to the DMV registration expiration date. If your registration expires April 15 2025, you can test from January 14 to April 14. In engine model year 2013 manufacturers started to install the required On Board Diagnostic OBD recording devices in the cab of diesel motorhomes. Our CarbCT will download a system health check from the On Board Diagnostic OBD port directly to a CARB reporting portal. Also sent to CARB during that download is the results and data recorded from the visual and documented engine inspection.

Prior to 2013 there were no OBD ports to collect compliancy health information.  Your CarbCT will need to perform a SNAP acceleration test. On a warm engine three full throttle 4 second long snaps to the acceleration pedal will prove a puff of smoke. The smoke puff is tested by an inspection devise attached to the exhaust pipe.  Our CarbCT will download results of that test directly to a CARB reporting portal. Also sent to CARB during that download is the results and data recorded from the visual and documented engine inspection. Snap tests require CARB feedback so a pass fail result will prove to your Carb Fleet profile in 3 to 15 days.

CARB Motorhome Registration

a slow moving overview of how to register

FAQ

NO .The DMV, or Department of Motor Vehicles, is responsible for managing vehicle registrations at local offices. CARB, or the California Air Resources Board, operates in Sacramento and some regional offices around the state.

Carb charges are $32 per vehicle. Tests cost between $95-and $115 Onsite travel port to port is $100. We can collect and pay CARB fees at your terminal if you did not set up a CARB account online.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • The CARB Registration Hold is a state-mandated requirement for vehicles that are registered in California.
  • The hold is placed on vehicles that have not met the state's emissions standards.
  • In order to remove the hold, you must have your vehicle smogged and pay any outstanding CARB Fees.
  • If you do not remove the hold, you will not be able to renew your registration or operate your vehicle legally.
  • Mileage: While most vehicles with less than 300,000 miles pass emissions tests, it's important to note that mileage is not a factor of the test. How well it has been maintained is a major role.
  • OEM Emissions Components: Vehicles that have not had their emissions components modified are more likely to pass emissions tests. This is because modified components can affect the vehicle's emissions output, making it more difficult to meet the required standards.
  • Dirty Air Filters: Dirty air filters are the leading cause of failed emissions tests. A dirty air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, which can cause the vehicle to run rich and produce more emissions.
  • Clean and Well-Maintained Vehicles: Vehicles that are clean and well-maintained are more likely to pass emissions tests. This is because regular maintenance can help to keep the vehicle's emissions system functioning properly.
  • Engine Code Dash Warnings: Vehicles with engine code dash warnings fail emissions tests . prior cleared issues need onroad miles to establish the engine operates in compliancy with repairs made

Complete Engine Labels: Vehicles need complete engine labels to pass emissions tests. The engine manufacture required label will state date of manufacture and EPA compliance verbiage. Injection pump labels must contain a FAMILY NUMBER

The California Air Resources Board (CARB)  is not affiliated with DMV. Even if DMV has not placed a registration hold you were required to register and test your diesel motorhome with CARB in 2003.  CARB recently organized a compliancy check with DMV and notices of Registration holds started to be sent in 2004. however CARB has not billed any of our Motorhome clients with fines and interest so far for paying 2023 fees late or not getting a 2023 smog test. We understand you must act to become compliant by December 15 2024 or face fines that can get steep

If you own a motorhome used for non-commercial private use and have received a incomplete registration, , it's crucial to take action to ensure compliance with the Clean Truck Check regulations. We understand the importance of resolving this matter promptly, and we can assist you in achieving compliance within a two-week period.

Our team will complete the necessary steps, including providing information about the applicable regulations, assisting with the registration process, and ensuring that your motorhome meets the required emission standards.

To avoid any further inconvenience or potential penalties, we encourage you to contact us today. We are dedicated to helping motorhome owners navigate the Clean Truck Check program and ensure a smooth and stress-free process towards compliance.
